Guiding principles for the work of the Cultural Center Pavillon

The Cultural Center Pavillon sees itself as an open space for culture, encounters and hospitality. As a diverse, cross-generational, multi-genre center in the heart of Hanover, it invites all culturally, socially and politically interested people of the city and the region to participate.
We organize socio-cultural and artistic projects in the fields of literature, dance & theater, music, cabaret and comedy as well as society & politics. Our aim is to promote dialogue on socially relevant topics, which takes place in the form of festivals, events, projects, political debates, lectures, exhibitions, film screenings, congresses and workshops. The Cultural Center Pavillon is run by a non-profit association, the Bürgerinitiative Raschplatz e. V.
We value an appreciative, respectful and mindful environment and do not tolerate ableism, ageism, anti-semitism, islamophobia, queerphobia, racism, sexism, trans*phobia, hate speech or violence.

Principles

1. The Cultural Center Pavillon was founded in 1977 by the Bürgerinitiative Raschplatz e. V. by citizens for citizens under the former name “Kultur- und Kommunikationszentrum Pavillon” in the tradition of alternative culture, of the political left and anti-capitalism and is still committed to these ideals today. It is non-denominational, non-party political and does not pursue any profit-oriented goals due to the non-profit nature of its supporting association.

2. The Cultural Center Pavillon sees itself as a place where social debates are dealt with artistically, textually and activistically. As a founding member of the Bundesverband Soziokultur e. V. and as a socio-cultural center in Hanover with an impact throughout Germany, we are aware of our responsibility to the citizens of the city and region of Hanover (and beyond) and act accordingly.

3. The Cultural Center Pavillon reflects the current discussion on relevant social issues in its program, aims to initiate social debates and processes with its events and to enable people to take an informed position on these issues. In socio-cultural terms, it promotes the users’ and cooperating partners’ own activities and enables easily accessible and participation-oriented offers.

4. The Cultural Center Pavillon sees itself as an important addition and extension to commercial event operations and offers a stage to actors who cannot access sufficient space elsewhere. In the spirit of popular culture, it aims to create easy access to various cultural formats. At the same time, the Cultural Center Pavillon must meet economic requirements as a subsidized institution.

5. The Cultural Center Pavillon aims to open up spaces for cultural experiments. In doing so, it seeks and promotes innovative and contemporary artistic content and formats in all fields of the multi-genre program. When curating the program, high standards are applied to the quality and content of the events and they are critically examined for their compatibility with the Pavillon’s guidelines. We expect partners, artists and agencies who work with us to become familiar with these principles and not to violate them in their actions and statements.

6. The Cultural Center Pavillon is an open house and offers all groups, initiatives and associations that work according to the principles of respect, appreciation and mindful cooperation the easy-access opportunity to meet and use the rooms. Depending on the project, the room rents are based on a fixed rental key that takes into account a number of socio-economic factors, among others. The foyer is also open to the public free of charge at certain times for individuals and small groups.

7. The Cultural Center Pavillon is a designated venue for socio-political events and aims to promote discussion in society. However, in line with our non-denominational and non-party political orientation, it is not available for primarily denominational or party-political events.

8. The Cultural Center Pavillon aims to allow pluralistic lifestyles to take place not only in the audience and on stage but to reflect the diversity of society within its own structures. It is committed to respectful, solidary and appreciative interaction within its own workforce and has structured the cooperation in flat hierarchies for this purpose. An open, transparent exchange of information is encouraged within the team.

9. The Cultural Center Pavillon is part of the “We Take Care” cooperation project, which aims to improve and promote awareness work at events and in culture. “We Take Care” stands for a sensitized team, an appreciative atmosphere, support and safe interaction at events. People who behave in a boundary-crossing manner in the center, who belittle and/or discriminate against other people, are therefore consistently banned from the building with reference to our house rules – so that people can feel safe and comfortable in the center at all times.

10. The Cultural Center Pavillon works according to its own awareness concept, which is continuously developed. The awareness concept is based on an intersectional understanding and firmly opposes discrimination and violence. It aims to promote a discrimination-sensitive practice, among other things by making marginalized perspectives visible in the form of artistic formats and in the active participation from a wide range of stakeholders.
The Cultural Center Pavillon team shows solidarity with people affected by discrimination. At the same time, it aims to facilitate a respectful and open dialogue and to explore new developments and ideas in close collaboration with our visitors.

11. The Cultural Center Pavillon recognizes the reality of the existential emergency caused by the climate crisis and uses its opportunities to raise social awareness for it. The Pavillon team is therefore pursuing the goal of greenhouse gas-neutral operations. Aware of the special role of art and culture, the Pavillon also provides space for artistic exploration of the consequences of climate change and the development of new perspectives and positive visions for our world.
